The Meenachil River Banks

Meenachil River emerges from the lap the Poonjar Hills. This perennial spring starts from the Illikkal Mala, flows down into the valleys of Poonjar and crosses the Meenachil Kara (land) nourishing the land and life on its banks. Pala, the main township perched on its basin is one of the earliest land chosen by settlers from far and near. The fertile soil has fed its people from the time as early as AD 1000. The waterway later developed into a river flowing towards the west coast with huge vessels plying to transport cargo. The river which passively flows like a ribbon of blue, meets the Vembanad Lake at Kumarakom. Geologists consider this river as old as the neolithic period. The sediment and riverbed rocks and fossils taken from here confirms the theory. Many fossils and remains of the prehistoric trees of huge size have been found on the river beds of Meenachil. The river, during its early period would have been a huge waterway flowing to the sea carrying gallons of water and nourishing both the banks with alluvial soil. The width of the river might have been a few kilometers and thick evergreen forest may have flourished on its banks. But as the result of large human settlements the forests gave way to farm lands and gradually the river began to shrink in size. Today the banks of Meenachil, from its birth place to its meeting point with the sea, holds thriving communities, urban cities, high yielding farm lands and a number of towns and villages.
