In and Around
The thickly wooded evergreen forests around the Periyar Reserve Bungalow are the natural habitat of varied flora and fauna. Here the plantation crops of the Downton Estate and the greens of nature coexist in perfect harmony. The Bungalow is situated on top of a hill surrounded by cardamom plantation on one side and a natural forest on the other side. So the more adventurous can always opt for a trekking through the plantation or take a guided trek through the thickly wooded forest nearby.
Common animals seen in the forest around the Bungalow
Elephants, Gaur (Bison), Sambar, Barking Deer, Mouse Deer, Malabar Squirrel, Flying Squirrel, Giant Hornbill, Small Hornbill, Black Macaque, Porcupine, Wild Cat, Fishing Cat, Toddy Cat, Otter, Verugue, Monster Lizards, different type of butterflies and geckos (lizards). The Downton area is one of the exclusive hornbill nesting forests in the Western Ghats. Here one can see the rare sight of Hornbill nest and feeding.
Occasional Sighting
Tiger, Leopard, Panther, Bear and Lion Tailed Macaque. The forest around the Bungalow also homes hundreds of birds and rare species of migratory birds.
