With imposing background of OOMMAMALAI on the west and the lush greenery all around the bungalow is a perfect retreat into the hills of MUNNAR.

The TALLAYAR VALLEY ESTATE was granted the title deed dated 1887 to MR JOHN PAYNE.

Since the original allocation of land for the development of tea gardens MR JOHN PAYNE AND WILLIAM MACKENZIE had the first tract of clearing done in 1893 after which MR MACKENZIE had gone to England for a while and come back in 1897as a director of TRAVANCORE TEA ESTATES company in peermade meanwhile TALLAYAR clearing was transferred to a few other pioneering proprietors including a Baron Von Rosenberg, who along with partner A W Turner later sold these lands to The Devicolam Estates Company.

The present owners acquired it in 1997 and primarily run the gardens as a tea plantation with a fully functional manufacturing facility, which is nearly a century old.

Its frontal façade is full stone with ivy creepers and its fireplaces & chimneys are in perfect working condition even after a century.

The morning tearooms sport lovely French windows and have a hexagonal corner with a 180-degree view of the rolling tea gardens and the front lawns.

The gardens were developed to full-fledged tea plantation in the early 1930’s and the house sported the region’s most famous lawn tennis court for decades.

Today this is being used as a lawn for summer B-B-Q’s and lunch parties.

The garden is in full bloom twice a year - March and September.
